Course overview and goals

In this course, we will read Donna Haraway's ”Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene” (Duke UP, 2016) and acquire knowledge about multiple approaches to environmental issues within the field of environmental humanities. Class sessions will involve close reading of the text followed by discussion grounded in its content. The aim of this course is to examine, together with students, the problems of narrative ossification and scale that act as stumbling blocks when discussing environmental issues, including global warming, and to provide an opportunity to generate creative approaches.

At the end of this course students will:
・Ability to read, understand and interpret academic literature in English
・Knowledge of foundational concepts in environmental humanities
・Skills to analyze discourses on environmental issues based on knowledge and theories

Class flow

All participants are required to read the text before the class. Students take turns to make up a resume and give a presentation. The presentation session is followed by a discussion session.

In the first class the instructor introduces environmental humanities, the author and the book, and choose chapters to read with t will be with students.

Students will acquire knowledge of environmental humanities, the author and the work studied in the course.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
