Course overview and goals
Students will visit clinical settings as part of an experiential program designed to understand the roles of healthcare professionals and the realities of medical practice in maintaining people’s physical and mental well-being. Through this experience, they will deepen their understanding of illness, health, and individuals living with disease, while also acquiring foundational knowledge of cutting-edge medical care.
Course description and aims
By experiencing the advanced clinical environment of the university hospital and interacting with healthcare professionals, participants will cultivate the professional mindset required of science and engineering researchers engaged in health and medical fields.

Class flow
Students will be divided into small groups, and each group will rotate through one clinical department per day over a five-day practicum period, visiting a total of five departments. In each department (clinical division), students will participate in observational training under the supervision of the assigned faculty member.
After the total number of enrolled students is confirmed, the Yushima Academic Affairs Office will determine the group assignments and allocate students to the respective clinical departments.
Prior to the practicum, an orientation (guidance session) will be conducted, during which the practicum handbook—including the rotation schedule—will be distributed and explained.
Please note that the meeting time and location differ depending on the clinical department. Students are advised to check these details carefully.

Prerequisites
Requirements
Attendance at the orientation (guidance session, scheduled to be held via Zoom for approximately one hour prior to the start of the practicum) is mandatory.
During the guidance session, students must sign a pledge regarding information security and the handling of personal data.
Students must undergo antibody testing in advance for designated viruses (HBs, measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps) and submit the Virus Antibody Test Result Report to the administrative office. If antibody titers for measles, rubella, varicella, or mumps are below the standard level, the required vaccinations must be completed by around the end of May 2026.
Students must attend all scheduled days of the hospital practicum (typically about five days in mid-to-late June).
Important Notes for Course Enrollment
Please note that this course may be canceled depending on the status of community infectious diseases.
(1) Because the hospital practicum is conducted in an actual clinical environment, students must carefully read the practicum guidelines in advance and act responsibly with appropriate professional awareness.
(2) In case of absence, students must submit a notice of absence to the Yushima Academic Affairs Office and notify the practicum supervisor or instructor in advance. (Absences will not be permitted except for illness or other special circumstances.)
(3) Confidentiality must be strictly observed (a pledge must be signed in advance).
(4) Practicum Conduct Guidelines
① Wear a clean white coat.
② Participate with appropriate appearance, attire, and demeanor expected of medical professionals (jeans, T-shirts, loose footwear, shoes without heels or with high heels, etc. are prohibited).
③ Refrain from wearing strong fragrances such as perfume.
④ Avoid private conversation.
⑤ Wear a nameplate (student ID).
⑥ Be punctual for assembly times.
⑦ Follow the instructions of supervising faculty.
⑧ Do not bring mobile phones, or keep them powered off.
⑨ A mask must be worn at all times.
⑩ If you feel unwell, do not participate in the practicum; instead, follow the instructions of the supervising faculty.
⑪ Other instructions: comply with directions given at each practicum site.
