Course overview and goals

This course focuses on systems design and project management techniques through an international project-based learning program. During the summer holiday, students of Science Tokyo visit a partner university under a student-exchange agreement and work together with students from the host institution (and, when applicable, other universities abroad). Through international group work, students develop a prototype that fulfills a given demand by repeatedly discussing, designing, prototyping, and testing based on their engineering knowledge. English is used throughout the program, and students build practical skills in teamwork, communication, and presentations in a multicultural environment.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) communicate and collaborate effectively in an international team, leading discussions and contributing to problem solving and consensus building in English.
2) translate needs into requirements and design, prototype, and evaluate a system/device/product (including mechanical elements where appropriate) that meets the defined requirements.
3) apply fundamental project management practices (e.g., planning, role assignment, schedule/risk management) to realize ideas as tangible deliverables.
4) present project outcomes and processes clearly and professionally in English, including handling Q&A effectively.
