Course overview and goals

This course is designed to develop English skills for the Reading and Writing sections of the TOEFL test through TOEFL-type exercises in reading and writing and reviewing of them.

This course aims to help students improve their TOEFL score and develop their English skills to study at universities in English speaking countries.

Course description and aims

In this course students will
・understand what TOEFL tests are like, especially in Reading and Writing sections, and how to answer the questions in each section of the test.
・develop academic skills in English and apply those skills to general situations.

Class flow

3Q+4Q Goals: While reviewing 1Q and 2Q content, we will focus on practical reinforcement (improving speed and responsiveness in answering) and acquiring the necessary skills for this.
(Vocabulary) Solidify the fundamentals of word formation
(Reading Comprehension) Practice solving reading problems under 250 words within the time limit
(Writing) Develop the ability to write about complex situations with nuance within the time limit for both Email and Discussion formats.

Before Class: Complete assignments and submit them via Google Forms.
Class: Discuss assignments, practice writing, and conduct peer reviews.

The class size will be limited, and whether or not one can take the course will be determined in the first class. Please make sure to attend the first class, and do not buy a textbook until the first class is over.

Students understand the skills covered in class and practice them through reading and writing exercises.

Class 4

Vocabulary; listening (academic content); reading and writing (academic discussion)

Students understand the skills covered in class and practice them through reading and writing exercises.

Class 5

Vocabulary; listening (academic content); reading and writing (academic discussion)

Students understand the skills covered in class and practice them through reading and writing exercises.

Class 6

Vocabulary; reading and writing (academic discussion)

Students understand the skills covered in class and practice them through reading and writing exercises.

Class 7

Review and final exam

Students revise the course content and take the final exam.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
