Syllabus

Course overview and goals

Based on English 7, English 8 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Reading intensively some English writings, students will improve their abilities to put grammatical knowledge to practical use, interpret English texts critically, and make an English composition. Students must prepare for class by translating some English passages and make a list of questions about them. Texts will be distributed by the instructor.

Class 2

Uses of Infinitives (Lecture)

Review infinitives using a high school grammar reference book or similar materials.

[Review]
Review the grammatical concepts covered in class and organize them so that you can explain them toothers.

Class 3

Uses of Infinitives (Practice)

[Preparation]
Review the materials from the previous class and organize the key points for identifying the uses of infinitives.

[Review]
Complete the remaining exercises and deepen your understanding of the uses of infinitives.

Class 4

Uses of that (Lecture)

[Preparation]
Review the grammatical topics related to that using a high school grammar reference book or similar materials.

[Review]
Review the grammatical concepts covered in class and organize them so that you can explain them toothers.

Class 5

Uses of that (Practice)

Review the materials from the previous class and organize the key points for identifying the uses of that.

Preparation for the Fourth Quarter Final Assignment

Review the content covered so far and identify areas you find difficult or unclear, organizing them in advance.

Reanalyze the structure of the passage covered in class and organize your understanding so that you can explain it to others. In addition, repeatedly practice reconstructing the original English sentences orally from the model translation or from your own translation.

Fourth Quarter Final Assignment / Review and Feedback

Conduct a comprehensive review of the course content and identify your own weaknesses and areas for further improvement.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The grade for the quarter will be determined as follows:
Final assignment (80%) and active participation in class (20%)
