Course overview and goals

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

This course aims to develop the ability to comprehend the structure of paragraphs and composition in English essay. Students will discuss the provided arguments and then write their own ideas in a paragraph. The writing will be submitted at the end of the class.The course also requires preparatory assignments to be completed.

Read the essay and answer the questions in Unit 7(pp. 60-65). Write a paragraph about your ideas on the Unit 7 topic.

Class 3

Unit 8 Three Tools for Learning at University

Read the essay and answer the questions in Unit 8(pp. 68-74). Write a paragraph about your ideas on the Unit 8 topic.

Class 4

Unit 9 Laugh, and Then Think: The Ig Nobel Prize

Read the essay and answer the questions in Unit 9(pp. 76-81). Write a paragraph about your ideas on the Unit 9 topic.

Class 5

Unit 10 Ecological Thinking

Read the essay and answer the questions in Unit 10(pp. 84-89). Write a paragraph about your ideas on the Unit 10 topic.

Class 6

Unit 11 Healthcare and Quality of Life in Two Cities

Read the essay and answer the questions in Unit 11(pp. 92-98). Write a paragraph about your ideas on the Unit 11 topic.

Class 7

Review and final exam

The final exam will cover Units 6-11. Review these Units.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
