Course overview and goals

To create value by conecting knowledge and skills, collaboration among various people is essential. Management of People and Organizations involves bringing people together under a common purpose, enhancing each individual's motivation and abilities towards achieving that purpose, and ensuring that everyone can collaborate effectively.
This lecture covers the fundamental theories of human resource and organizational management, practical examples from businesses, and leadership skills necessary to drive organizations and projects.
The aim is to acquire the foundational knowledge and skills in human resource and organizational management that will be necessary for students to thrive in their future academic lives and in society, as they collaborate and work with various individuals.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the fundamental theories of Management of People and Organizations.
2) Explain the basic theories of motivation and psychological characteristics that underlie the behavior of individuals and organizations.
3) Articulate in their own words how they will exercise leadership to enhance the performance of organizations and teams.

The instructor has conducted research and studies on corporate management and human resource and organizational management at the Japan Management Association, and has been involved in planning training programs to develop executives and leaders. Subsequently, the instructor has taken on responsibilities in the human resource development department of a company, focusing on practical aspects of human and organizational development and organizational management.
In this course, the instructor will lecture on key points of Management of People and Organizations, incorporating their personal experiences and insights from corporate practices.

Class flow

Class is scheduled as follows;
Aug 17th (Mon): Class 1 (period 1-2), Class 2(period 3-4), Class 3 (period 5-6), Class 4(period 7-8)
Aug 18th (Tue): Class 5 (period 1-2), Class 5(period 3-4), Class 7 (period 5-6)

The class will be conducted using slides, along with the introduction of case studies from companies and the instructor's personal experiences. Additionally, discussions will be held in pairs and small groups to help students envision practical applications in the real world after graduation.

To enhance your learning outcomes, please come prepared with thoughts on what you would like to learn from this lecture. Additionally, reflect on your past experiences where you collaborated with others on a project, demonstrated leadership, or felt that you experienced significant personal growth. While prior submission is not required, it would be helpful to summarize your thoughts in a simple note. There will be time during the class for the instructor to ask questions and for you to engage in discussions with one another.

The course will be conducted using visual materials such as slides, without the use of a textbook.

Lecture materials will be provided on the Science Tokyo LMS.
Reference books will be introduced during the course as needed.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Evaluation will be based on contribution to discussions during the class (30%) and a report to be submitted after all lectures (70%). The report should be approximately 2000 characters and summarize how you intend to apply what you have learned from the lectures. It will be assessed based on logic, originality (whether your own thoughts are articulated), and specificity.
