Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This lecture clarifies energy and environmental issues, which have been gaining importance in recent years in a globalizing society, based on various statistical data and materials from the current situation in Japan and abroad. The lecture will also provide basic knowledge to examine energy and environmental issues in relation to technology, economy, and social systems, and to understand the framework for seeking solutions to these issues through specific policies and case studies.
The aim of this course is to provide students with enough knowledge to examine closely interrelated social issues such as energy, resources, and the environment, both from a holistic perspective and in some depth on individual issues. In particular, the course aims to enable students to understand market mechanisms, such as liberalization, and to consider solutions and future prospects in the process of thinking.

Course description and aims

At the end of this course, students will:
(1) Understand current status and issues of energy and environment in Japan and the other nations in the world
(2) Understand how energy and environment problems are related to technology, economy, and social systems
(3) Have in-depth understanding with respect to solutions for energy and environment issues from perspectives of market liberalization and institutions
