Course overview and goals
The purpose of this course is to provide students enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program" with a systematic understanding of the academic fields related to the main research results of their doctoral dissertation. Students will organize the historical development, background, and issues of these fields, mainly by reviewing previously published papers and textbooks, and compiling their findings into a report. The prerequisite for taking this course is that the student has enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program". Systems and Control Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program 1-1D and 1-2D differ only in the quarter in which they are offered (2Q or 4Q, respectively), and overlapping enrollment is not permitted. Credits earned in this course may be counted toward the credit requirements for completion of the program.
Course description and aims
・The student should be able to organize the history, development, background, and outstanding issues of related academic fields based on his/her own research achievements, which form the core of the doctoral dissertation research, mainly through a review of previously published papers and textbooks. The expected level is equivalent to that of a review article or the related work chapter of a doctoral dissertation.
・The student should be able to gain a systematic understanding of the relevant academic field and clarify the position of his/her doctoral dissertation research within that field through the above review.
・To be able to summarize the above results in a logical and systematic manner in a written report.
・To be able to explain the above results not in a closed form understandable only to those involved in the academic field, but in a form of expression that can be easily understood by the general public.

Class flow
Students enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program" will first discuss and agree on the appropriate scope of the research to be handled in this project with their academic advisor, based on the research results that will serve as the main material for their doctoral dissertation. Then, a list of journals, lecture summaries, and textbooks appropriate for the research subject of this project will be prepared. Based on the reading of the literature, organize the history, background, and issues of the development of the relevant academic field. Compile them into a report to gain a systematic understanding of the relevant academic field. Students are advised by their advisors to revise the bibliography and report in the mid-stage of report writing.
After obtaining confirmation from their academic advisor, students shall submit the completed report to the course via the academic advisor. The course shall comprehensively evaluate the report, and determine whether credit should be granted. If credit for this course is approved, the student shall register for the course in the earliest quarter in which course registration is possible. The course will then submit a grade report based on this approval. Students who wish to take this course should begin the process well in advance. If a student attempts to take this course immediately before completing the doctoral program, there may be no quarter available in which the student can register for the course after approval has been granted by the course.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Based on the reports and presentations submitted by the students, the academic advisor and the course examines whether the students have a sufficient systematic understanding of the relevant academic fields from the perspective of their doctoral dissertation research. Specifically, credit will be given based on whether the report is sufficiently valuable as an introduction to the doctoral dissertation. This course is not graded on the basis of points, but on a pass/fail basis.
