Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course focuses on the basics of business administration (management strategy, marketing, accounting) and corporate economics. First, the instructor explains basic knowledge of business management. The second instructor explains the elements of business development, including the concept of platform-driven business. The third instructor provides an overview of corporate financing options and helps students develop their understanding of the roles of disclosure and corporate governance.

Course description and aims

Students will develop the critical skills that individual should have in order to work effectively in business organizations and to lead teams and organizations successfully. Also, students will have better understanding of the connection between the courses in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Economics and the reality of corporate management. research.

Class flow

This course is taught by three instructors. The first five sessions will be taught by Kimura with a focus on general topics of business management. Eko will teach Sessions 6 to 9 which focus on business development, especially digital platform and a case study about Uber Technology. Sessions 10 to 14 will be taught by Yasu, covering corporate financing options and the roles of disclosure and corporate governance.

Guidance: Firm value and decision-making

Students can understand management as “decision-making that affects firm value” and explain the basic concepts.

Class 2

Organization and incentives

Students can explain the problems arising from conflicting interests and information asymmetry within organizations.

Class 3

Strategy: Competitve advantage and value creation

Students can explain the basic frameworks of competitive strategy (e.g., differentiation, cost leadership, and barriers to entry).

Class 4

Designing decision-making processes

Students can explain decision-making under uncertainty (exploration vs. exploitation; prediction vs. optimization).

Class 5

Group work

Students can structure appropriate KPIs and policy/initiative proposals for a given case.

Class 6

Introduction to business plan

Students learn the introduction of a business plan and lean process based on the literature provided before the class. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries.

Case Study: POKEMON GO!

Students are expected to download and read case material via the WEB system. A case study will be prepared in advance for students to read.

Firms and Capital Markets: Mapping the Financial System

Provides an overview of the role of the financial system and organises the range of corporate financing options.

Class 11

Corporate Financing - Bonds: Debt Logic and Trade-offs

Understand core features of debt financing and compare bonds with bank borrowing.

Class 12

Corporate Financing - Equity: Growth Capital and Dilution

Learn equity financing and the trade-offs between funding growth opportunities and control considerations.

Class 13

Information Disclosure: A Common Language for Evaluation

Develop an intuitive view of firm value and learn how disclosure relates to uncertainty and the cost of capital.

Class 14

Corporate Governance: Mechanisms that Support Value Creation

Organises key governance mechanisms and their implications for firm value.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
