Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is for students who have JLPT_N3 level proficiency and further wish to proceed to JLPT_N2 level. Reading practices on various kinds of materials will be conducted to help students acquire skills for effective reading. Students are expected to select their own materials, and share the content with other students both orally and in writing through various oral / composition practices. It is desirable to have taken Intermediate Japanese 5.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) read and comprehend more complicated Japanese;
2) share what they read with others both orally and in writing.

Class flow

Students are expected to prepare for the class by reading textbooks, and writing assignment will be given at the end of each lesson. Students are required to attend every class, and to take the final exam. Students will be provided with support which will lead them to achieve their autonomous vocabulary / grammar learning.

Class 1 Lesson 5 Not on time: Explain a broad summary of data obtained from figures or tables Write an essay comparing the two ways of thinking.
Class 2 Lesson 5 Not on time: Compare Japanese with other cultures. Revise and resubmit your essay.
Class 3 Lesson 6 Great East Japan Earthquake: Learn about disasters and prepare for them. Obtain information about disaster preparation or disaster evacuation.
Class 4 Lesson 6 Great East Japan Earthquake: Learn about disasters and prepare for them. Write an essay or prepare a poster presentation, “Disaster preparation/ disaster evacuation”.
Class 5 Lesson 6 Great East Japan Earthquake Lesson 7 Stress Find issues from what you have read so far and write your opinion.
Class 6 Lesson 7 Stress Revise and resubmit your essay.
Class 7 Final Exam, interview or presentation

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes each for preparing for and reviewing each class (including the time spent for assignments) by referring to textbooks and other course materials.
