Course overview and goals

This lecture explores the history of Shanghai as a modern city spanning over a century and examines its evolving relationship with society and culture across different eras. The course will also engage with research papers and relevant literary works to deepen the understanding of these transformations.

Course description and aims

This course aims to develop the following knowledge and skills:
1.Cultivating the ability to understand urban culture from a broad perspective by incorporating diverse viewpoints, including history, sociology, and journalism.
2.Developing the ability to appreciate literary works while considering their social and political contexts, as well as critically reading related research papers.

Class 3 Urban Life During and After the War: 1937-1949 Prepare to express your opinions after reading the assigned literature.
Class 4 The Dream and Reality of the Chinese Revolution: 1949-1966 Prepare to express your opinions after reading the assigned literature.
Class 5 The Turmoil of the Cultural Revolution: 1966-1978 Prepare to express your opinions after reading the assigned literature.
Class 6 The Emergence of "Reform" and "Opening-Up": 1978-1992 Prepare to express your opinions after reading the assigned literature.
Class 7 Urban Life in the Period of High Growth: 1990-2010 Review all previous lessons and prepare for writing the report.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
