Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is a fundamental course in which master's students learn a comprehensive and condensed set of basic knowledge and skills that will be practical use in developing their future careers as well as in their job-hunting. This course corresponds to all career paths, including advancement to the doctoral course and entering private companies after completion of the master's degree program. The content of the course covers social rules, ethics, money flows in companies and universities, and entrepreneurship, and how to develop their career in industry and academia which can be efficiently understood from a broader framework.
The goal of the course is for students not only to acquire relevant knowledge, but also to regard the content of the lecture as their own personal issues, and to consider how it will be specifically valuable/applicable to their own future career development.
Lectures are given by faculties and lecturers who have rich practical experience in central government offices, universities and private companies.
Lectures are delivered in Japanese, so students should have Japanese language skills enough to understand the content of the lectures.

This course is classified as a "livestream" with direct teaching by Zoom. Therefore, students are required to attend every lecture in real time. If students are unable to attend regularly due to other activities such as laboratory seminars or other lectures, do not take this course.

The overall contents of Master's Career Development Basics A1, A2, and A3 in 1Q are identical, but the lecture order may be different. Therefore, when taking this course, be sure to choose one of these courses and attend lectures in that course continuously. Students should not attend lectures in different courses from week to week.

Prior to taking the course, please make sure that students have downloaded the latest version of the Zoom application. (Avoid connecting with browsers such as Chrome as it may be unstable or have limited functionality.) To maintain students' concentration, the connected device is preferable to be the one with a larger display, such as a PC, and tablet. Students should prepare a camera and a microphone for interactive lectures.

In order to avoid being unable to attend lectures in real time once a course starts due to a poor communication environment, prior to taking the course, students must ensure an Internet environment with a speed of 600 kbps/1.2 Mbps (upload/download) or higher, without worrying about data volume during lecture time.

Three courses are offered in the 1Q (A1, A2, A3), one in the 2Q (B), and one in the 3Q (C). Students are recommended to select one according to their own study plans.

Course description and aims

By taking this course, students acquire the following;
1) Understand the various career paths available in the future by listening to lecturers who have extensive experience in academia and industry.
2) Understand the general framework such as social rules and the flow of money in companies and universities, as essential knowledge for job-hunting and building a future career.
3) Understand industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship.
4) With regard to 1) to 3) above, find out what is specifically valuable/applicable to your future career development and consider them.

Class flow

Lectures will be on-line via Zoom. Students are required to participate in real time in principle, in order to make sure interactivity between the lecturers and students.

In lectures, PowerPoint presentations will be used, with many examples and charts to facilitate understanding. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the lectures by joining Zoom polling and asking questions.

An assignment will be given in each lecture, and students will be required to write and submit a report. The reports will be reflected in the evaluation and their contents should be something that students can refer back to in the future as they develop their own careers.
Feedback on submitted reports that would be valuable for students to share will be provided at a later date, with comments from the lecturer when necessary.

Class 1 Introduction, and career path after completion of master's degree program students (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand the variety of career paths available to them after completing their master's degree program, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 2 Career development in private companies (ITO Sachiko) Students are able to understand how to build a career in private companies and its approach, including the lecturer's own experience, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 3 Job hunting(FUKUOKA Waka) Students are able to understand the schedule, flow, and approach to job-hunting, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 4 Career design for those seeking academia(TANAKA Hidekazu) Students are able to understand career paths into academia and university, find reference in them towards building their own future careers, and develop their own ideas about them.
Class 5 Basic knowledge of money flow in companies, universities and research institutes (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand how to gather and analyze information such as company earnings, and how money flows through universities and research institutions, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 6 Industry-academia collaboration, and university-led startups (INOUE Toru) Students are able to understand the promotion of industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship at Science Tokyo in order to realize their research results in society, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 7 Social / business rules such as laws and standards, ethics, and SDGs (WAKAYAMA Koji) Students are able to understand that society has various rules, including laws and standards, which are deeply related to technology, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for lecture and another 100 minutes reviewing lecture content afterwards (including assignments) for each lecture.
They should do so by referring to course material.

No textbook. In principle, lecture materials prepared by the lecturers will be uploaded to Science Tokyo LMS in advance of each lecture.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Evaluation methods and criteria

An assignment is given in each lecture and the students are required to attend it in real time, and write and submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each lecture on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.
