Course overview and goals

We will learn Japanese culture areas through language, arts, music, and several plays of children. We will discuss some uniqueness of Japanese culture from the viewpoint of international students. By means of culture study, we will learn the introduction of the Japanese language as well.

Course description and aims

You will find some Japanese cultures which you have not noticed before taking this class. You will be interested in things Japanese. You will acquire the introduction parts of Japanese language knowledge as well through this culture course.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
D4E(Dictation for Every day) is mandatory to practice dictation every day.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students must attend all classes. Latecomers will not be allowed to attend class.
All presentations, reports, and visitation activities are required.
No credit will be given for missing any one of the above requirements.
There will be daily short reports and a final report.
Each report must be sufficiently complete to pass the course.
Daily listening comprehension (D4E) assignments are required.
After ensuring that attendance, examinations and assignments, discussions, and presentations are each sufficient, the overall score will be weighted as follows: assignments 20%, examinations 65%, and presentations/discussions 15%.

Prerequisites

Student's language level must be lower than basic or the equivalent level.
Students must speak in English.
Participation in class should be active and cooperative.
