Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is for students who have JLPT_N3 level proficiency and further wish to proceed to JLPT_N2 level. Reading practices on various kinds of materials will be conducted to help students acquire skills for effective reading. Students are expected to select their own materials, and share the content with other students both orally and in writing through various oral / composition practices.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) read and comprehend more complicated Japanese;
2) share what they read with others both orally and in writing.

Class flow

Students are expected to prepare for the class by reading textbooks, and writing assignment will be given at the end of each lesson. Students are required to attend every class, and to take the final exam. Students will be provided with support which will lead them to achieve their autonomous vocabulary / grammar learning.

Class 1 Lesson 1 Mt. Fuji: Learn how to get an overview of the reading material. Search about Mt. Fuji and report what you find interesting.
Class 2 Lesson 2 Enthusiasts: Learn how to get an overview of the reading material Write an essay: “Attraction of Mt. Fuji”.
Class 3 Lesson 3 Washoku & Japanese food: Learn the academic/ formal writing style of Japanese. Revise and resubmit your essay.
Class 4 Lesson 3 Washoku & Japanese food: Learn how to explain the differences between similar concepts. Write an essay: “Food and culture”.
Class 5 Lesson 3 Washoku & Japanese food: Learn how to describe your culture. Revise and resubmit your essay.
Class 6 Lesson 6 Ghost story: Read and write an old story. Write a ghost story or folk tale
Class 7 Lesson 6,Examination, Interview or presentation

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes each for preparing for and reviewing each class (including the time spent for assignments) by referring to textbooks and other course materials.
