Course overview and goals
This course is aimed at students who have finished the study of basic level Japanese with knowledge of about 250 basic Kanji. Students will learn Kanji often used for the study of lower-intermediate level Japanese language as well as for daily life and campus life including their research activities. Students will learn the pronunciation and the meaning of each Kanji and Kanji combinations, and will further expand their knowledge of Kanji system and skills for recognizing Kanji which will lead them to achieve their autonomous Kanji studying.
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various Kanji combination words often used for the study of lower-intermediate level and N3 level of JLPT;
2) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of Kanji combination words which they haven't seen before;
3) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow
Students will learn 15 new kanji in each class. Through activities and assignments in the class, students will acquire knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend 30-60 minutes each for preparing for and reviewing class (including the time spent for assignments) by referring to textbook and other course materials.

In order to take the final exam, students are required to have a minimum attendance of 60%.

Prerequisites
Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to lower- intermediate level (with knowledge of around 250 kanji). Applicants who have passed Japanese kanji: Basic 2 are, in principle, accepted in this course, however, new applicants are required to take Kanji level test. This course is for students who do not use kanji in their first language.
