Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is aimed at students who have finished Japanese Kanji :Basic 1 (or those who have studied about 150 kanji). Students will learn basic Kanji often used for daily life and campus life. The aim of this course is to help students acquire further knowledge of Kanji system and skills for recognizing Kanji through various class activities.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various basic-level Kanji combination words;
2) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow

Students will learn 18 new kanji in each class. Class activities will be offered to help students acquire knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Class 1 Course guidance / Kanji for dairy life (病・院・地・鉄・銀・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 2 Kanji for dairy life (言・考・思・知・運・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 3 Kanji for dairy life (番・号・部・屋・体・・)/ Kanji skill (Radicals) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combinations and kanji skill (radicals).
Class 4 Kanji for dairy life (都・県・市・区・同・・) / Kanji skill (Kanji with same pronunciation) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combinations and kanji skill(Kanji with same pronunciation) .
Class 5 Kanji for students life (意・具・調・冷・熱・・)/ Kanji skill (Category of Kanji) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combinations and kanji skill (Category of Kanji).
Class 6 Kanji for students life (研・究・発・表・堂・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 7 Final examination and Feedback Review of Kanji combination

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend 30-60 minutes each for preparing for and reviewing class (including the time spent for assignments) by referring to textbook and other course materials.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Class performance 20%, Assignment 20%, Final examination 60%.
In order to take the final exam, students are required to have a minimum attendance of 60%.

Prerequisites

Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to upper-basic level with knowledge of about 150 kanji. Applicants who have not passed Japanese kanji: Basic 1 are required to take Kanji level test if necessary. This course is for students who do not use kanji in their first language.
