Course overview and goals

This course is aimed at students who have studied Japanese before (e.g. half-year basic level study with knowledge of 50-100 kanji) to acquire basic knowledge of Kanji (shape, pronunciation, meaning and combination), and to further acquire basic knowledge of Kanji system and skills for recognizing Kanji through various class activities.

By the end of this course, students will be able to pronounce and understand the meaning of basic-level Kanji combination words.

Class flow

Students will learn about 20 new kanji in each class. Class activities will be offered to help students acquire knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Class 3 Kanji for location (上・下・中・・・)/Kanji for adjectives(新・古・高・・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 4 Kanji for nouns(店・音・手・・・)/Kanji for verbs(聞・話・書・・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 5 Kanji for nouns(国・館・員・・・)/Kanji for verbs (入・出・始・・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.
Class 6 Kanji for adjectives(長・短・多・・・)/ Kanji for season and family(春・夏・家・父・母・・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, and combinations.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend 30-60 minutes each for preparing for and reviewing class (including the time spent for assignments) by referring to textbook and other course materials.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Class performance 20%, Assignment 20%, Final examination 60%
In order to take the final exam, students are required to have a minimum attendance of 60%.

Prerequisites

Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to upper-basic level with knowledge of 50-100 kanji. Applicants are required to take Kanji level test. This course is for students who do not use kanji in their first language.
