Course overview and goals

All of the "Academic Writing in English" courses are designed to provide graduate students with strategies to improve their academic writings and write well-framed research articles. Objectives include learning from various journal articles, using appropriate vocabulary and expressions. The course will examine models presented in the textbook and scientific articles to help guide the writing process. Students will receive individual feedback from the instructor. In addition, students will participate in peer-critique to develop skills to become critical readers and to give constructive criticism to their colleagues.

As a graduate level course, Academic Writing in English 15 equips students with the necessary tools and analytical knowledge to write solid, well-informed journal articles.

Course description and aims

By the end of the course, students will be able to produce a short journal article on their research.

Class flow

This course will be held weekly on Zoom.

The instructor will provide the in-class feedback during group work, whole group work, and peer review sessions and utilize T2SCHOLA to facilitate students’ learning. The instructor will ensure students’ learning through weekly in-class and after-class assignments, group discussion, whole group share, and peer review sessions. Students’ learning will be evaluated through weekly in-class and after-class assignments, class activities, and final paper.

Writing skills are developed to enable students to write manuscripts that reflect the styles found in academic journals.

If the number of students wishing to enroll exceeds capacity, a limit may be imposed. Students who wish to take this course must attend the first class. Additionally, please do not purchase the textbook until your enrollment in the class is confirmed during the first session.

Class 1 Course Introduction Lecture: Basic Structure of an Academic Paper How to Identify Your Audience Identify course aims. Reading assignments will be announced in class.
Class 2 Argumentative Essay: Examining the Structure of the Introduction The class objective is to learn the structure of an Introductory paragraph.
Class 3 Argumentative Essay: Writing an Introduction Paragraph The class objective is to learn how to write an Introduction with a strong thesis statement.
Class 4 Argumentative Essay: Examing the Structure of a Body Paragraph The class objective is to learn the basic structure of a body paragraph.
Class 5 Argumentative Essay: Writing a Body Paragraph The class objective is to learn what information should be included in a body paragraph and how to write strong transitional sentences.
Class 6 Argumentative Essay: Examining the Structure of a Conclusion The class objective is to learn the basic structure of a concluding paragrah.
Class 7 Argumentative Essay: Writing the Conclusion The class objective is to learn how to summarize the main arguments of a paper in a concluding paragraph.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
