Course overview and goals
This course focuses on measurements of health-related indexes by students themselves, and covers the fundamentals of health sciences.
Students will measure and observe physiological and psychological responses to physical exercise.
The approaches/methods are not only useful for health sciences, but applicable to study disciplines dealing with humans (e.g., mechanical engineering, life science) .
Course description and aims
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) acquire the ability to assess health-related indexes in humans, by using physiology, biomechanics and psychology.
2) have an understanding of background mechanisms of health.
Keywords
physiology, biomechanics, psychology
Competencies
- Specialist skills
- Intercultural skills
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Practical and/or problem-solving skills
Class flow
In most classes, students measure several indexes or practice, write short reports, and submit them immediately before the end of the class.
Attendance is taken in every class.
Course schedule/Objectives
Course schedule | Objectives | |
---|---|---|
Class 1 | Orientation and body composition assessment | Orientation for this course. Measure waist circumference and body fat percentage. |
Class 2 | Muscle strength assessment | Learn and practice methods of muscle strength measurement. |
Class 3 | Estimation of VO2 max | Learn and practice methods for estimating VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) and aerobic capacity. |
Class 4 | Exercise practice | Practice setting exercise intensity using heart rate monitoring and perform bodyweight resistance training. |
Class 5 | Energy balance | Study and analyze energy intake from food consumption and energy expenditure from physical activity to understand energy balance. |
Class 6 | Prevention of sarcopenia | Learn assessment methods for sarcopenia and study practical prevention approaches suitable for individuals with low fitness levels. |
Class 7 | Final assessment | Verify training effects and conduct comprehensive evaluation of physical fitness improvements. |
