Course overview and goals

Entrepreneurship education does not simply aim to develop entrepreneurs who aim to establish startup companies, but also aims to develop human resources who can bring new value to society. Many organizations in society, including large companies and research organizations, are in high demand for people who have and can demonstrate "entrepreneurship."

Science Tokyo also hopes that each student will train their own "entrepreneurship" and use it as a driving force for creating new research results and new businesses (whether for large companies or startups) in the future.

This course is positioned as the first step in building a foundation for entrepreneurship, and within that foundation, we would like students to understand (1) MOTIVATION; recognizing the source of one's own interests and recognizing unconscious bias, and (2) INNOVATION; basics of “Design Thinking”, including process of 5 steps; empathy, issue identification, ideas, prototyping, and testing, through following 2 kind of workshops. We would like students to use this course as an opportunity to participate in various workshops or to move on to the stage of demonstrating their own "entrepreneurship" and trying to implement it in society, offered in our other courses.

Workshops to be attended:
1. Developing Creative Thinking through Art (4 sessions):
Participants will create their own art (abstract paintings) based on a theme, and through viewing them with other participants. While participants can expect to train their creativity, by sharing (verbalizing) their own thoughts and feelings, participants will recognize their motivations and understand the existence of unconscious biases through physical experience. There is a possibility that they will discover sources of motivation that they have not noticed before. They will also receive instruction on how to create art (abstract paintings).

2. Design Thinking for beginners (3 sessions):
"Design Thinking" is widely known as a methodology for creating innovation that is used by many large companies and venture companies, including Google and Apple, as well as Japanese companies. Understanding the concepts of "Creative Confidence" (being able to demonstrate each person's creativity) and "User Centric" (having a user perspective), which are its essence, overlaps with the essence of "entrepreneurship". In this workshop, participants will practice the processes of "empathy", "define", "ideate", "prototype", and "test", and will take the first step in experiencing "Design Thinking".

The two workshops above will be facilitated by the following expert instructors with extensive teaching experience.
1. Developing Creative Thinking through Art:
Kimi Hasebe, Mari Mori, Hiroko Takahashi, Ayako Nakamura, and others, ELAB

2. Design Thinking for beginners:
Yutaka Iimori and Kazuya Sawai, Digital Surf Inc.
