Course overview and goals

・This lecture assumes that students have already earned all the credits for the teaching subject courses, including Method of Teaching Science I to III and Exercise of Practical Research on Science Education I.
・Building on the work done in Exercise of Practical Research on Science Education I, we will deepen and re-examine the themes of educational practice research, develop teaching materials, and engage in educational practice targeting everyone from junior high school students to citizens, as well as examining the effectiveness of this practice.
・By engaging in educational practice with a wider range of targets, we aim to be able to put into practice science education that meets diverse needs.
・We also aim to develop the self-learning skills needed to become a teacher who continues to learn.

Course description and aims

Across all achievement objectives of the core curriculum for teaching, the following will be addressed.
・To acquire the methods to effectively solve the research themes of educational practice in science education using educational technology methodologies.
・To be able to explain the relationship between contemporary and comprehensive issues such as the SDGs, discipline-based epistemological approaches of science and domain-specific knowledge, and to be able to carry out practical educational research.
・Students will learn how to use scientific methods to solve their own immediate problems, and will also develop the ability to explain the practicality of science.

Keywords

Project-Based Learning, discipline-based epistemological approaches of science, SDGs, New Backward Design Method, Warp and Woof Model of Problem-solving

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Focusing on the acquisition of knowledge and methods necessary for the implementation of tasks, discussion necessary for problem solving, and joint development of teaching materials necessary for research on educational practices, individual work will be carried out mainly outside of class hours to prepare for educational practices. For this reason, after each class, students will do homework on assigned tasks decided during class, and report and discuss them in the next class before moving on to the content of that class session.
Classes will be held as intensive lectures, so please check the class schedule on the web page of the teaching program (https://www.te.ila.titech.ac.jp/).

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Reexamine and define the theme as the research on educational practice that you will work on. Reexamine and concretize the theme of the exploratory activity of educational practice, and formulate a plan for practice (analyze the problem and clarify the concept and purpose). After the class, students will develop and submit a plan for the selected theme and its implementation (mainly concept and objectives).
Class 2 Reporting and discussion of the theme of the educational practice inquiry activity and its practical plan (setting of the issue, outline planning of the practical plan, and examination of the form of practice). After the class, students will submit a plan of practice (mainly the issue, outline and form), and the specific plan will be discussed before the third class.
Class 3 Practical planning exercise (review and preparation of specific drafts of practical plans). After the class, submit a concrete plan for the practical plan and proceed with the design of teaching materials before the 4th class.
Class 4 Exercise 1 in developing teaching materials (examination and preparation of designed draft teaching materials). After class, students will submit a draft of the teaching material and prepare the material before the 5th class.
Class 5 Exercise 2 for developing teaching materials (examination and improvement of created teaching materials). Improve and complete the teaching materials before the 6th class.
Class 6 Formative evaluation of teaching materials and policies for improvement. Improve the practice plan and teaching materials and submit the final version before the 7th class.
Class 7 Educational practice and reflections on it. Reflections from the perspective of the educational practice research theme. Submit a report on your efforts in this class by the designated date.
