Course overview and goals

"Spanish: Basic Course 4'' is designed for students who have finished "Spanish: Basic Course 3''. By the end of the quarter, students will have learned to express themselves in simple phrases and sentences, using basic verbs, including several irregular verbs and several tenses other than present tense, such as subjunctive, imperative, and past tenses. You will learn to read and write simple texts in those tenses and moods, and the basic rules of the Spanish grammar.

Class flow

The instructor explains the main grammatical points of the day. Students will solve some quizzes on related topics, and also read texts in classroom to get a better understanding of each topic.

Class 1 There will be 7 or 8 sessions during the course, depending on how the class advance. Contents of this quarter (which may vary): Tenses (past tenses, etc.) and moods (indicative, imperative and subjunctive); and other important grammatical topics such as syntaxes (2). To be announced in each class.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

To be announced at the 1st session. You may purchase the textbook at the COOP bookstore beforehand.
Attention: Until the 2024 academic year, one text book was used in all the classes, but this is not the case from this year on.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Instructors will recommend useful books, websites and other resources in class.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Learning achievement is evaluated by the end of term exam (50%) and other measures such as mini-quiz, participation and end of term essays or recordings (50%). Each class will use a different measures to allocate 50 points, and the details will be explained at the first session.
