Course overview and goals

The purpose of this course is to master the communication skills needed when traveling in France or for short stays in French speaking countries. While learning how to resolve common situations like making a reservation, asking for something to be done, expressing the willingness to do something, thanking someone, giving one's opinion, exchanging personal information, etc, students will progressively be introduced to useful vocabulary and grammar patterns and at the same time, to the reasons behind the French way of thinking and communicating. Thus, it can be considered as a sociocultural introduction to France through communication.
　For students willing to study in a French-speaking country for an extended period, this conversation course constitutes a preparation to the DELF A1 level diploma.
　Language used : Japanese and French (50%)

By the end of this course, students will confidently
・manage short converstions in daily life situations
・understand written instructions
・ask for useful information
・state their opinions and preferences
・understand why French people interact in a certain way

Class flow

Each lesson introduces a new situation which will first be explained, then practiced through exercises. Students work in groups of two or more, using the conversation patterns of the textbook to master these new skills, then create new configurations of speech using skills gained from previous lessons. Prononciation will be thoroughly corrected to give students confidence that they will be understood and differences with Japanese and English ways of expression will be reviewed and explained to prevent misunderstandings.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to course materials.

Internet will be used in class and students will be asked to do Internet searches.

Evaluation methods and criteria

There will be no exams. Attendance 30%, work in class 70%.
