Course overview and goals

All of the "English Presentation Seminar" courses are designed to provide students with the tools to deliver effective presentations with confidence. As these are practice-oriented courses, students will deliver multiple presentations throughout the term. Furthermore, students will sharpen their listening skills by learning how to ask good questions and become active listeners.

As an elective 100-level course, English Presentation Seminar 2 offers the basic skills for delivering well-structured group presentations.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to give individual and group presentations followed by question and answer sessions, applying the skills and knowledge discussed in this course.

Class flow

Improving presentation skills though practical exercises
If there are many students wishing to enroll, there may be a limit on the number of students. Students
wishing to enroll must attend the first class. Additionally, do not purchase the textbook until enrollment in
the class has been confirmed during the first class.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Organisation. Structures and their impact. How a good structure is essential for the presenter and the audience.
Class 2 Organisation 2 Making perfect notes. Note-making and the dangers of reading a presentation from a script.
Class 3 Practice. Visual elements and how to maximize impact. Slides and props as essential aids to clarity and the dangers of over-reliance on visual elements.
Class 4 Practice. Presenting facts and figures. How to avoid confusing the audience with too much data.
Class 5 Asking and answering questions. Asking and answering efficiently. The techniques of making questions from the audience work for you.
Class 6 The power of the English language. How to use the language to put across your point.
Class 7 Last practical full presentation. Assessed Presentation and self-assessment. Group feedback.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
