Course overview and goals

All of the "English Presentation Seminar" courses are designed to provide students with the tools to deliver effective presentations with confidence. As these are practice-oriented courses, students will deliver multiple presentations throughout the term. Furthermore, students will sharpen their listening skills by learning how to ask good questions and become active listeners.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to deliver well-framed individual presentations followed by question and answer sessions, be aware of verbal and non-verbal messages while engaging the audience in their topics, and field questions from the audience.

Class flow

This class is designed to introduce students to the key points of presentation structure, as well as the key skills required to deliver a successful presentation. A variety of topics will be introduced and discussed, and students will be expected to plan, practice, and deliver presentations based on these topics. The number of students in this class will be limited to 20. If the number of enrollments exceeds the limit, there is a possibility that we may conduct a lottery during the first class.

Class 1 Students will discuss the topic of people, choose a person for their biography presentation, do research, and study language for sequencing events. Spoken fluency, research skills, specific vocabulary
Class 2 Students will finish preparing, practice, and deliver their biography presentation, followed by a question and answer exercise. Writing, spoken fluency, posture, eye contact, gestures, voice control, cue cards, active listening
Class 3 Students will discuss problems in the world today, as well as possible solutions, choose a topic for their presentation, and study the key language required to deliver it. Spoken fluency, specific vocabulary
Class 4 Students will continue to research and prepare their problem solution presentation. Writing, creating cue cards, specific vocabulary
Class 5 Students will practice and deliver their problem solution presentation, followed by a question and answer exercise. Spoken fluency, posture, eye contact, gestures, voice control, cue cards, active listening
Class 6 Students will discuss their positive and negative past experiences, chose an idea for a story presentation, and then make an outline. Spoken fluency, specific vocabulary, making notes
Class 7 Students will practice and deliver their story presentation, followed by a question and answer exercise, incorporating all of the skills learned this quarter. All of the above presentation skills

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class. They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
