Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is designed to develop English skills for the Reading and Writing sections of the TOEFL test through TOEFL-type exercises in reading and writing and reviewing of them.

This course aims to help students improve their TOEFL score and develop their English skills to study at universities in English speaking countries.

Course description and aims

In this course students will
・understand what TOEFL tests are like, especially in Reading and Writing sections, and how to answer the questions in each section of the test.
・develop academic skills in English and apply those skills to general situations.

Class flow

Students will practice the READING, WRITING and LISTENING sections of the TOEFL test, using the textbook.
The class size will be limited, and whether or not one can take the course will be determined in the first class. Please make sure to attend the first class, and do not buy a textbook until the first class is over.

Class 2 Unit 1 Listening:New Student Orientation to solve exercise problems on pp.12-16
Class 3 Unit 2 Reading: Geology to solve exercise problems on pp.17-23
Class 4 Unit 5 Integrated Essay; Independent Essay to solve exercise problems on pp.35-39. to summarize the points made in the lecture on p.39 and explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage in 200 words.
Class 5 Unit 3 Listening (lecture) Psychology to solve exercise problems on pp.24-28
Class 6 Unit 7 Reading Biology (Invasive Species) to solve exercise problems on pp.47-53
Class 7 Review and final exam to review the overall content of the course

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
