Syllabus

Course overview and goals

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

This class is designed to be a very student centered/interactive class with students discussing and debating various topics. New vocabulary and grammar will be routinely introduced to enable students to articulate ideas more clearly and to facilitate discussion. Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups and presentations will be incorporated into class activities.

Class 2 Business and Work : Appropriate “Business and Work ” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Business and Work ” will be incorporated. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting
Class 3 Entertainment: Appropriate “Entertainment” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Entertainmet ” will be incorporated. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting
Class 4 If (conditionals) : Appropriate “If (conditionals)” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “If (conditionals)” will be incorporated. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting
Class 5 America : Appropriate “America” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “America ” will be incorporated. Students will be put into groups and choose an “America’ topic to present. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting
Class 6 Students will present (in groups) “America” presentations to the class, along with questions/answers. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting
Class 7 Opinions: Students will work in pairs and discuss their opinions on various topics. Exam. Fluency/vocabulary/listening/Presenting

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
