Syllabus

Course overview and goals

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

This class is structured to improve students' skills for reading and writing by reading essays on current science topics in various fields, expanding their vocabulary, and practicing writing sentences so that they can express their own ideas in English. After learning new vocabulary, students will read the essay, understand its main idea and details, and practice reading the essay aloud. The rest of the class time will be spent on writing exercises using the expressions learned. Students will also learn about how to organize paragraphs in papers and articles.

Class 3 Unit 13 AI and a Traditional Game Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 73-78 of the textbook.
Class 4 Unit 14 Secrets of Biomimicry Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 79-84 of the textbook.
Class 5 Unit 17 Hay Fever Horror Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 97-102 of the textbook.
Class 6 Unit 18 Pleasure Threshold Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 103-108 of the textbook.
Class 7 Review and term-end examination Review the scope of the exam.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
