Course overview and goals

English 5 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

This course aims to develop advanced English proficiency through English-language films. Emphasis is placed on analyzing scripts, enhancing grammar and vocabulary skills while working toward the ability to watch films without subtitles. Additionally, students will strengthen their speaking and presentation skills through output-based activities such as presentations. The selected films feature a high volume of dialogue and are chosen for their accessibility to students. The course will focus on films with natural conversations, modern young protagonists, and relatable themes such as romance, self-discovery, and urban life.

Class 1 Opening Scene – Gatsby & Ashleigh’s Plans (0:00–10:00) Casual dialogue, expressions of excitement, and planning activities.
Class 2 Ashleigh’s Interview with Roland Pollard (10:00–20:00) Politeness in professional conversations, film-related vocabulary.
Class 3 Gatsby’s Walk & Encounter with Chan (18:00–30:00) Witty, flirtatious exchanges, sarcasm, and informal speech.
Class 4 Gatsby and Chan’s Taxi Conversation + Phone Call with Ashleigh (00:36:00–00:41:00) How people describe their partners to others, contrast in speech style between a friend and a partner.
Class 5 Gatsby and Chan Reflect on Their Past at the Museum (45:00–48:00) Nostalgic conversations, shifting between humor and sincerity, and discussing past relationships.
Class 6 Gatsby and Chan Discuss His Mother’s Party & Comfort Zone (54:00–57:00) Expressing opinions about social expectations, discussing personal growth, and conversational persuasion.
Class 7 Gatsby’s Mother’s Confession (1:15:00–1:20:00). Exam. Expressing personal history, discussing life choices, and emotional tone in dialogue.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Presentation: 50%, Comprehension quizzes: 50%
