Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This class is about Future society from the perspective of working style. Traditional workers needed to go to their offices and factories. Thanks to the development of internet, we can work whenever and wherever. The working style has completely changed.
There are gaps, however, among regions, socio-economic status and gender. People and organizations which can utilize technology and not are totally different. In this class, we learn the diversification of the working style. Students learn about pros and cons about the changing working styles. Plus, they will discuss the new rule in the "Future of Work."

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:1) Understand the change of circumstances of corporations after globalizations and spreading internet. 2) Understand the worker's rights. 3) Understand global discussion on "Future of Work." 4) Speak about technology and working style based on their own ideas.

The instructor is a business journalist with 20+years experience interviewed over 1000 people including corporate executives and young professionals. Based on the experience, I provide practical and the latest knowledge about global business.

Class flow

In addition to lectures, students have opportunities to think and talk when they participate in group work and whole class. The instructor often asks many questions to students. This course encourages international students to participate in. The instructor speak in Japanese but students can talk both in Japanese and English. There are some reading materials students can read both in Japanese and English.

Class 1 Orientation Understand about the goal of this class, and discuss how our working style changed.
Class 2 How people worked in dacades ago? Submit a report based on interview with people who are older than you.
Class 3 Variety of working styles Learn about membership type and job type, negotiaton of salary.
Class 4 Think about how students will work Develop a PPT about how students will work
Class 5 Work life balance for men: a case of Japanese company Learn about a trial all male workers take parental leave.
Class 6 Search workplaces by using database Learn how to use database organized by government organization.
Class 7 Discussion Discussion based on study 4th and 6th.
Class 8 Technology and working styles Learn about working style and technology.
Class 9 Discussion Discussion based on previous class.
Class 10 Work Life Balance Think about work and life balance which students hope.
Class 11 Long working hours and Karo-shi Learning about long working hours.
Class 12 Reading assignment Read a book and write a report.
Class 13 Discussion Have a discussion based on reading report.
Class 14 Ideal future of work What is the issues we need to fix?

Study advice (preparation and review)

There is a reading assignment and other four reports.

In the first class, reading assignments will be assigned.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students knowledge, analytical skill and active participation are assessed. Report 70%, participation to group work and class 30%.
