Course overview and goals
This is an introductory course about Western art history from Ancient Greece to 19th century art. Through appreciating masterpieces such as Parthenon, Gothic architectures, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Manet, you will understand the sense of values and the role of art in Western society. This course gives students many chances to share and discuss their impressions with other students.
This course has two aims. The first is to give students basic knowledge to understand Western culture. The other is to develop students' communication skills to convey persuasively their impressions and ideas .
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the Western art history including from a cultural and social context.
2) Enjoy and appreciate works of art and broaden their artistic experience.
3) Analytically and comprehensively convey their aesthetical impressions to others.
4) Grasp multiple meanings of works of art through discussions with others.

Class flow
First, participants exchange their impressions they get from the given work and then lecturer give lecture based on participants' comments.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to course material.
