Course overview and goals

This course covers psychological principles pertaining to educational settings, mostly in school environment. The lectures help students to acquire knowledge of psychology of education.

Course description and aims

The students are supposed to gain familiarity with psychological knowledge and application to education.

Class flow

In each class, students receive a handout as file attachments in advance, and the lecture goes on by using Powerpoint.

Class 1 Learning and Developmental Stages Understand the characteristics of student learning during developmental stages
Class 2 Memory processes Understanding the stages of human memory processes.
Class 3 Thought Processes Understanding the thinking process of students
Class 4 Analogy and Knowledge Transfer Understanding the Analogy and Knowledge Transfer
Class 5 Learning motivation (1) Understanding how motivations matter in learning.
Class 6 Learning motivation (2) Understanding how motivations matter in learning.
Class 7 Teaching Methods and Collaborative Learning Understanding Teaching Methods and Collaborative Learning
Class 8 In-class presentation by the students and feedbacks from the instructor. Can present the understanding acquired through the coursework.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

In-class learning enthusiasm: 20%
Performance on the final exam and the final presentation: 80%
