Syllabus

Course overview and goals

The first to 3rd lecture will introduce examples of public architecture and urban public space not only in Japan but also in North & South Americas and European countries and think about ideal and sustainable public space in Japan.
The 4th to 6th lecture will focus on the cultural heritage conservation and adaptive reuse. At first, this course will focus on the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation. After that, through various case studies from Japan and abroad, we shall learn how the cultural heritage conservation contributes to build sustainable built environments. At the end of this course, students will understand how to focus on the issues in the specific areas and propose the solutions using the cultural heritage conservation methods.
The last lecture will be a discussion on the sustainable regional revitalization from point of view of the adaptive reuse of the cultural heritage and the citizens’ participation.

Through this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the problem-solving techniques in practical field.
2) Understanding role of Public Architecture in global cities
3) Understand the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation.
4) Understand the various methods and techniques to develop sustainable built environments using the cultural heritage conservation.

The lecture of Ishida involves the knowledge from the work experience as an Architect (Principal of KIAS, ex Herzog & de Meuron Associate).
The lecture of Dr. Hiraga involve the knowledge from the work experience as monument conservator (ex. senior researcher at Cabinet office).

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Prerequisites

Students who have taken UDE.D405 "Sustainable Built Environment" (2 credits) in their senior year of undergraduate study in 2023 should apply for two courses, this course (1 credit) and UDE.D415 "Basics on Conservation and Preservation of Historic Environments" (1 credit) offered in the third quarter of the year, as No. 8.
