Course overview and goals

In the course targeted only at international students that belong to IGP program of the architectural department, the objective is to discusses the particular characteristics of traditional Japanese architecture, with students seeing firsthand national treasures and important cultural properties in the Kinki region.
Architectural history is one of the oldest fields of architecture and building engineering. For the international students in this field, who are expected to have bright futures as international architects and architectural engineers, the class is a good opportunity to correctly and systematically understand the Japanese architectural culture during their stay in Japan.

Course description and aims

The aim of this course is to deepen students' understandings on the characteristics of traditional Japanese architecture through visiting many important cultural properties in Kinki region.

Class flow

This is an intensive course. The participants of this course are required to attend lecture and 6-7days tour to earn a credit.

Class 2 Historic temple buildings in Ikaruga area Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 3 Historic buildings in Nara prefecture Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 4 Historic buildings in Shiga prefecture Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 5 Historic buildings in Kyoto prefecture Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 6 Historic buildings in Kyoto prefecture Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 7 Historic buildings in Kinki area Read the instruction of the visiting buildings beforehand.
Class 8 Conclusion Confirm the drawings of visited buildings.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

The contribution to every class and submission of the final report are requested to the participants.

The class is limitedly available for IGP international students in Major on Urban Design and Built Environment or Major on Architecture and Building Engineering. Students need to take the class "Architectural Workshop 1".
