Course overview and goals

Understand what society should be like in the future in terms of the relationship between urban and rural areas towards a sustainable society.

Class flow

In line with the aims of this course, the class will be divided into first and second halves, each with its own theme. Students will read the textbook and submit assignments in advance, which will be explained in class, followed by discussion. Prior study is essential for this class.

Class 3 Landscape, local food and local identity Review of sustainability from the view point of landscape
Class 4 modernization and agriculture, rural villages Review of history of rural area
Class 5 city and agriculture Review of the relationship between city and rural area
Class 6 sustainable rural development Research and discussion about the way to the sustainable future
Class 7 report presentation and discussion Research some case and discussion

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
