Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course focuses on planning and designing urban/transportation infrastructure. It covers the fundamental skills of presentation explaining significance and reasonableness of the projects, design of infrastructures, and logical evaluation of the projects considering various stakeholders and elements.
This course consists of lectures and group work. In group work, each group deals with a topic about 1. urban expressway, 2. railway network, 3. transportation hub, 4. airports, 5. disaster management, and 6. tourist city. Each group creates planning alternatives, conducts evaluation of alternatives, and finally designs urban/transportation infrastructure. Students report their achievements by mid-term/final presentations, reports, and deliverables.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Have an understanding of fundamental skills of project management.
2) Produce a report of the projects which includes logical explanation and evaluation based on findings.
3) Have skills of identifying issues of a project and proposing alternatives.
4) Have an understanding of logical evaluation of the projects considering various stakeholders and elements.
5) Acquire the oral competence necessary to make presentations in Japanese, articulate views/ideas/findings, etc., and debate effectively.

Class flow

This course consists of lectures and group work. In group work, students are required to conduct a literature review, on-site review/survey, planning alternatives, evaluation of alternatives, and finally, design urban/transportation infrastructure. Students report their achievements by mid-term/final presentations, reports, and deliverables. Attendance is taken in every class.

Class 2 Lecture no.2 about fundamental skills. Group discussion about fundamental information about projects. Conduct literature review about target projects.
Class 3 Lecture no.3 about fundamental skills. Group discussion about the results of the literature review. Summarize literature review result and extract inherit problems of the target projects.
Class 4 Analysis of the data from the survey. / Group discussion about the fundamental concept of the target project. / Site investigation for target projects (1). Summarize and analyze the survey data. /Establish the fundamental concept/vision of the target project. Conduct site investigation and extract issues.
Class 5 Analysis of the data from the survey. / Group discussion about the fundamental concept of the target project. / Site investigation for target projects (2). Class 7 Mid-term presentation. Create mid-term presentation and report.
Class 8 Study tour for infrastructure projects (tentative). Summarize the study tour results and remark the own idea about the project.
Class 9 Re-examination of the fundamental concept of the target project. Review the comments from the mid-term presentation and modify the concept of the projects.
Class 10 Group discussion about the design of planning alternatives (1). Compare the project alternatives.
Class 11 Group discussion about the design of planning alternatives (2). Compare the project alternatives.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 50 minutes preparing for class and another 50 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students’ course scores are based on exercise (20%), report (20%), presentation (20%), and deliverables (40%)
Attendance of at least 80% of lectures and full attendance of mid and final presentations are compulsory.

No prerequisites, but the students of Civil & Eng. Department will be prioritized to take this course due to the capacity constraints.
