Course overview and goals
This course will teach you the role of metal ions in the biological processes and in the medical applications. You will learn molecular level function and structure in the metal ion related reactions. Following the brief overview, you will understand the role of metal ions in oxidoreductase, atom and group-transfer reaction, electron transfer, and homeostasis of metal ions in biological system.
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explain structure and function of metal ions in oxidoreductase
2. Explain importance of electron transfer reaction in biological system.
3. Explain medical application of metal ions.
4. Explain homeostasis of metal ions in biological system
Keywords
bioinorganic chemistry, oxidoreductase, electron transfer, metals in medicine, homeostasis of metals
Competencies
- Specialist skills
- Intercultural skills
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Practical and/or problem-solving skills
Class flow
(1)At the beginning of each class, the previous class is reviewed, then the essential points of this class are shown as exercise
problems.
(2)Towards the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to what is taught on the begining of class to solve as
needed.
(3)Before coming to class, students should read the course outcomes and check what topics will be covered. Required learning
should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes.
