Course overview and goals
[Summary of the course] In this course, structures and bonds, polar covalent bonds: acids and bases, and alkanes and cycloalkanes, and their conformation will be explained to the students who want to study organic chemistry systematically.
[Aim of the course] Bonds are the basic element of organic compounds. In addition, alkanes and cycloalkanes are basic skeletons of organic molecules. Therefore learning about them is essential to understand the reactivity and physical properties of organic compounds. In this course, students first understand the bonds based on molecular orbital. Next, students understand the polarity caused by the electronic bias and acids and bases from the polarity. In addition, we overview the functional groups to determine the properties of organic molecules. Finally, students understand the nomenclature of saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes), and develop the ability to discuss their stereoisomers and conformations.
Course description and aims
Students will be able to acquire the following capabilities by taking this course.
(1) Ability to understand the covalent bond that is the basic element of organic chemistry.
(2) Ability to understand the polarity and acids and bases generated by the electronic bias.
(3) Ability to understand naming and conformation of the alkane.

Class flow
This course will proceed in the following order: (1) structure and covalent bond, (2) a polar covalent bond: acid and a base, (3) alkanes and their conformations, (4) cycloalkanes and their conformations. In the last class, practice problems and interpretation of them will be provided to check the level of understanding.

Class 7 | Practice problems and interpretation for confirming the level of understanding | Solve practice problems by accurate understanding of the above all lectures. |
Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
