Syllabus

Course overview and goals

The purpose of this course is to acquire the basic knowledge of organic reactions and biomolecules. At First, this course focuses on the reactive functional groups, such as amines. The characteristics and detailed reactions of amines are studied. Then, several types of biomolecules are introduced, and the correlations between their molecular structures and specific functions are explained.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the basic mechanism of organic reactions focusing on amines.
2) Know the reactivity of specific functional groups and the synthesis of various organic compounds.
3) Grasp the chemical structure‒property relationship of biomolecules.
4) Explain the correlation between the molecular structures and functions on biomolecules.

Class 1 An Overview of Organic Reactions and Introduction of Amines Understand the kinds and mechanism of organic reactions.
Class 2 Amines and Heterocycles Explain the properties of amines.
Class 3 Amines and Heterocycles Explain the synthesis and reactions of amines.
Class 4 Biomolecules: Carbohydrates Explain the structures and properties of monosaccharides.
Class 5 Biomolecules: Carbohydrates Explain the structures and properties of polysaccharides.
Class 6 Biomolecules: Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins Understand the structures and properties of amino acids and explain the synthesis.
Class 7 Biomolecules: Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins Explain the peptide synthesis and the protein structures.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
