Syllabus

Course overview and goals

The aim of this lecture is to provide students with a basic knowledge of the mechanical response of materials used for mechanical components to external forces, and to help them understand the need for and methods of strength design of the mechanical components. First, the mechanical properties of materials and the relationship between stress and strain are explained. Next, the concepts of allowable stress and safety factor are addressed. Furthermore, the mechanical response of materials under tension/compression, torsion and bending is explained.

Through this course, you will acquire/understand the followings.
1) Basic concept of mechanics of materials with comprehensive understanding of stress and strain.
2) Stress and strain of bars and shafts under tension, compression, and torsion.
3) Stress, strain, and deflection of beams under bending.
