Course overview and goals

This course focuses on the way of material selection when people design products. In this course, students will learn how materials' physical properties, mechanical properties, thermal behavior, electrical response, durability, and environmental impact can be reflected in design.

Course description and aims

At the end of this course, students will be able to select materials which students want to design by learning basics of material selection through exercise and case studies.

Keywords

Materials, Design

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

This course introduces how to select appropriate materials and checks students' understanding through exercises. Students will have chances to work on the cases by applying knowledge acquired through this course in the latter part of the course.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Engineering Materials and Properties, Material Property Charts Understand materials history, engineering materials and properties.
Class 2 Material Selection Understand material selection.
Class 3 Multiple Constraints and Conflicting Objectives Understand multiple constraints and conflicting objectives.
Class 4 Selection of Materials and Shape Understand selection of materials and shape.
Class 5 Hybrid Materials Understand hybrid materials.
Class 6 Environment and materials Understand environment and materials.
Class 7 Case studies on familiar products Deepen understanding of material selection through case studies

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
