Course overview and goals

The purpose of this course is to provide students enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program" with a systematic understanding of the academic fields related to the main research results of their doctoral thesis by organizing the history, background, and issues of development of the academic fields, mainly by reviewing previously published papers and textbooks, and compiling them in a report. The prerequisite for taking this course is that the student has enrolled in the " Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program". The four courses in Systems and Control Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program 2A-D differ only in the timing of enrollment (1Q to 4Q, respectively), and overlapping enrollment is not permitted. They may be added to the credits required for completion of the program.

Course description and aims

・The student should be able to organize the history, background, and issues of the development of related academic fields based on his/her own research results, which form the core of the doctoral dissertation research paper, mainly by reviewing previously published papers and textbooks.
・The student should be able to gain a systematic understanding of the relevant academic field and clarify the position of his/her doctoral dissertation research within that field through the above review.
・To be able to summarize the above results in a logical and systematic manner in a written report.
・To be able to explain the above results not in a closed form understandable only to those involved in the academic field, but in a form of expression that can be easily understood by the general public.

Class flow

Students enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program" will first discuss and agree on the appropriate scope of the research to be handled in this project with their academic advisor, based on the research results that will serve as the main material for their doctoral dissertation. Then, a list of journals, lecture summaries, and textbooks appropriate for the research subject of this project will be prepared. Based on the reading of the literature, organize the history, background, and issues of the development of the relevant academic field. Compile them into a report to gain a systematic understanding of the relevant academic field. Students are advised by their advisors to revise the bibliography and report in the mid-stage of report writing. The student submits the completed report to the course via the faculty advisor. After students submit their reports, the faculty advisor will provide them with an opportunity to explain verbally the contents, and credit will be granted based on a comprehensive evaluation of the report and the content of the questions raised by the advisor.
If the course is approved for credit, the student shall report the course in the most recent Q in which the course can be reported. The course will then submit a grade report based on the said accreditation. If a student attempts to take this course at the very end of the doctoral course, there may not be time in the schedule to complete the course after it is approved by the course.

Specifically, credit will be given based on whether the report is sufficiently valuable as an introduction to the doctoral dissertation. This course is not graded on the basis of points, but on a pass/fail basis.
