Course overview and goals

Students form relatively small groups and construct their own unique autonomous robot for a given contest. Through this process, students are expected to have experience of realizing ideas on the robot exploiting all the available resources obtained in the courses in this department.
Students will be familiarized with the system construction process through the group project using the knowledge of microcomputers, sensors and actuators, electrical circuits, and all the techniques in systems and control engineering.

Course description and aims

By the end of the course, students will have the ability to:
1) construct a unique autonomous robot by integrating the knowledge in both the physical domain (hardware) and the cyber domain (software),
2) have skills to communicate with other engineers through the contest and the presentation.

Keywords

Autonomous Robots, Mechatronics, Group Project, Machine Learning

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

We have three competitions.
In competition A, we focus on the physical domain and perform competitions that utilize autonomous robots' movement control.
Competition B focuses on the cyber domain and competes for autonomous robots' ability to think for themselves.
In Competition C, the physical domain and the cyber domain are connected, and the autonomous robot thinks, moves, and works on its own.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Introduction Competision A: Physical domain Competision B: Cyber domain Competision C: Cyber-andPhysical domain Presentation In the competision, students build own autonomous robots.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

None required.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Handouts will be provided on the courses.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Grading is based on the products, the poster presentation, final reports, and class attendance.
Note that the results at the contest are not the main factor for the grading.
