Course overview and goals

[Overview]
The aim is to deepen understanding the physical phenomena learned in class through measurement and visualization by forming teams of around 4-5 people and experimentally verifying . To achieve this, students design, discuss, and create experimental equipment (or parts of it, such as measuremental setup and data processing software), and then carry out experiments and evaluations.

[Objectives]
1. Develop the ability to clarify the phenomena under investigation, determine what should be verified and understood, identify issues, and propose solutions.
2. Master the PDCA cycle by examining the required equipment, measurement instruments, and data processing methods, planning the experiments (Plan), manufacturing the equipment and conducting the experiments (Do), evaluating the results (Check), and making improvements as needed (Action).
3. Cultivate management skills by planning and promoting projects as a group.
4. By applying and utilizing previously acquired knowledge while independently studying unlearned areas, acquire a broader range of mechanical engineering knowledge and deepen understanding.

Course description and aims

1) Through discussions within the team, be able to plan and carry out projects to solve problems.
2) Be able to learn and use knowledge of mechanical engineering and other necessary related fields on your own initiative.
3) Understand your own role in the team, and acquire teamwork skills to carry out the project as planned.
4) Develop the skills to record the details of your work, and to complete the final outcomes (experimental equipment, reports, presentation materials, video reports, etc.) and bring the project to a successful conclusion.
5) Develop the skills to clearly explain the details of your work to others.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京科学大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京科学大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
