Course overview and goals

International collaboration is a crucial aspect of Earth and planetary sciences. To disseminate one’s research findings globally as a researcher or to work internationally as an engineer in the private sector, improving English communication skills is essential. This course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate on topics related to Earth and planetary sciences in English through self-planned English learning and/or practice in English presentations. International students who are already fluent in English can earn credit by studying academic Japanese.

Class flow

Contact the instructor and receive an explanation of the course requirements before registering for the course. Submit a proposal to the instructor before starting their learning project. Upon completion of the project, submit a report and products promptly.

Class 1 A wide range of activities that align with the purpose of this course are recognized as valid learning projects. Examples include: - Self-organized English study groups using international English news sources - English presentations at international conferences or research seminars, as well as practice sessions (e.g., giving a rehearsal in front of lab members or collaborators and receiving feedback) - Independent study using English learning materials Develop your own learning plans, implement them, and conduct self-evaluations.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
