Syllabus
Course overview and goals
The course teaches basic knowledge on laboratory safety in chemistry field. Therefore, the concept of safety and risk, potential risk caused by chemical hazards, related low, chemical risk assessment, resources and waste, management of chemical waste and emergency procedures are learned. Chemical substance and global environmental issues are also discussed.
This course will allow students understand laboratory safety before Laboratory Course in Basic Chemistry in the year of sophomore. In addition, toward Class A hazardous materials engineer's qualification examination, students will learn related low regarding chemicals. Students will also learn how to use fire extinguisher in case of emergency.
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, students will:
1) Understand the concept of safety and the significance of preparation for safety chemical experiments
2) Explain potential risk caused by chemical hazards and significance of risk assessment
3) Explain chemical substance management and it related low
4) Explain chemical substance and global environmental issues
5) Explain emergency procedures
6) Use fire extinguisher in case of emergency

Class flow
At the beginning of each class (90 min), a topic in course schedule is introduced by a lecturer. Towards the end of class, students are given quiz related to the lecture given that day and commentary to the solution guide for the quiz is provided (last 10 min). Attendance is taken in every class.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

To perform experiments safely (Kagakudojin, in Japanese), in addition, course materials are provided during class.

Exercise problems in each class (20%) and a final exam (80%)
