Course overview and goals
The aim of the seminar is to prepare participating students for future research activities. A subject for the seminar is chosen through discussions with the academic supervisor. Students are expected to obtain a deep understanding of the subject by reading related literature and giving oral presentations. They get a chance to see how an advanced theory is developed based on the fundamental ideas of various fields that they learned during their prior training. They explore the connections between concepts while utilizing multiple points of view. They also encounter the boundaries of knowledge: insufficiently understood phenomena and open problems that are potential topics of future research.
This course is an important part of Tokyo Tech’s laboratory-based educational system, in which individual students work on specific research themes. This is complemented by coursework with a more structured curriculum. By studying active research fields, it is expected that each student will acquire comprehensive skills to identify and develop solutions to newly emerging problems.
