Course overview and goals

A series of lectures on cutting-edge issues in solving real-world problems and realizing super smart society will be provided to master-course and doctor-course students enrolled in the WISE (World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) program for Super Smart Society, in cooperation with the Super Smart Society Promotion Consortium.

Course description and aims

The aim of this course is to help students cultivate high-level understanding of both quantum science and a super-smart society, professional expertise in specialized fields related to both cyber space and physical space technologies, and critical-thinking skills to solve multidisciplinary social issues. In particular, the student will be able to explain the current status and future of the three workplaces, as well as the environmental controls of the workplaces and their design.

Class 1 Future cities from Mitsubishi Estate's vision This lecture introduces the efforts to realize a smart city in the Otemachi/Marunouchi/Yurakucho area from the perspectives of health, robotics, resilience, and mobility (MaaS: Mobility as a Service). Specified in the lecture
Class 2 Center of Workplace: Office This lecture introduces the efforts to achieve both net zero energy building (ZEB) and workers' wellness, and the building's air conditioning and lighting systems in the Mitsubishi Electric's cutting-edge office "SUSTIE." Specified in the lecture
Class 3 Place where work and rest coexist: House With the outbreak of the COVID-19, a function for work is now required inside houses. Asahi Kasei Homes proposes a house with a workspace based on their recent research. Specified in the lecture
Class 4 Place that is neither office nor home: Third Place Using the case of 3×3Lab Future, which promotes business networking in Otemachi, this lecture introduces the role of third places in innovation and communication through AR, VR, and other digital technologies. Specified in the lecture
Class 5 Automated control to support smart workplaces Focusing on "air conditioning" which is a building facility that keeps our workplaces comfortable, Azbil explains the steps of air conditioning from sensing to automatic control. Specified in the lecture
Class 6 Design of work styles for workers In the diverse workplaces introduced in Lecture 1-5, how do workers select work styles in the future? ITOKI introduces the concept of ABW: Activity Based Working along with ideas for future work styles. Specified in the lecture
Class 7 Design for student learning Changing the perspective from "working" to "learning," this lecture proposes the future of lectures and the role of college campuses, using the case of ITOKI's "Smart Campus Solution." Specified in the lecture

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
