Syllabus

Course overview and goals

In this course, students will overview early modern history of Japan.
The lecture will then focus on the figures of the rulers and noteworthy events of the relevant period, learning about the similarities and differences with the present day.

Course description and aims

1) To confirm what students have learned from textbooks and other sources, and to understand multifaceted history.
2) To understand the situation in Japan at that time by learning about the personalities of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and successive Tokugawa shoguns, and the events that occurred in their respective eras.

Class 4 Tokugawa Ieyasu and his time The period of Tokugawa Ieyasu is examined from primary historical sources.
Class 5 Tokugawa Hidetada and his time The period of Tokugawa Hidetada is examined from primary historical sources.
Class 6 Tokugawa Iemitsu and his time The period of Tokugawa Iemitsu is examined from primary historical sources.
Class 7 Tokugawa Ietsuna and his time The period of Tokugawa Ietsuna is examined from primary historical sources.
Class 8 Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and his time The period of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi is examined from primary historical sources.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to course material.

Course materials will be provided during class.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Points will be allocated for a short report (80%) and a final report (20%), which will be collected at the end of each class.
